Web[2] Bursty bulk flows (BBFs) play an active role in mag-netospheric substorms [cf. Baker et al., 1996; Angelopoulos et al., 1999; Baumjohann, 2002]. One of the important aspects of this BBF activity is the connection of a BBF to the ionosphere through field-aligned currents (FACs). Theo-retical work suggests that on the dawnside of the flow burst Websheet (IPS). Bursty bulk flows (BBFs) are excised from the two databases, and the average flow pattern in the non-BBF (quiet) IPS is constructed. At local midnight this ensemble-average flow is predominantly duskward; closer to the flanks it is mostly earthward. The flow pattern agrees qualitatively with calculations based on the Tsyganenko [1987]
Websatellites we report on the statistical properties of bursty bulk flow events (BBFs) in the inner plasma sheet (IPS). A positive correlation between BBFs and the AE index suggests that BBFs are predominantly geomagnetically active time phenomena. Earthward BBFs are more frequent close to midnight and away from Earth, up to a distance of ~19 RE.
